K-3 Reading Specialist

Sallie B. Howard School of Arts and Science — a free, public charter school serving over 1,000 K-12 students in Wilson, NC – is seeking a reading specialist to implement and coordinate a successful reading program for K-3 students. The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in reading or ELA, have 5-7 years of teaching experience in ELA, extensive training in reading instruction and in-depth knowledge of instructional tools, trends and programs.

Additional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in reading or ELA with extensive course work in education
  • 5 to 7 years of teaching experience with program coordination experience
  • Hold a valid North Carolina Professional Educator’s License
  • Thorough knowledge of reading rules, theories and principles that are used in reading education.
  • Thorough knowledge of the North Carolina State Curriculum as it applies to reading.
  • Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of reading instruction.

Responsibilities:

  • Reports to K-5 Principal
  • Assist K-3 teachers with improving techniques of reading and English Language Arts instruction and improving overall student achievement;
  • Provide instructional strategies and various tools to aid the instructional process; observe teachers and provide feedback and/or demonstration lessons.
  • Ensure teachers and principals are familiar with any changes to the North Carolina Curriculum regarding reading
  • Design curriculum, new course offerings and guidelines for student placement.
