Visual Art Teacher

Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts & Education — a free, public charter school serving over 1,000 K-8 students in Wilson, NC (with a high school opening in 2020) – has an immediate opening for a Visual Art Teacher to join our Arts program.

The ideal candidate should hold a Bachelor’s degree (a Master’s is desirable) in Art or Art Education, with an excellent record of academic and professional achievement and leadership.

Applicants should have prior experience in establishing creative environments in which art is explored, discovered, and observed both in and out of the classroom.

The chosen teacher will instruct K-12 students on the basics of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and art history, but also maintain an area of focus that they can teach in greater depth. Active artists with extensive portfolios are preferred.

Additional skills and requirements for this position include:

  • Organizational skills and proficiency in using a wide variety of art media, technology and approaches.
  • Ability to integrate art concepts, artwork, art history, styles, and aesthetics with classroom units, concepts, and themes.
  • Effectively collaborate with other art teachers and content area teachers.
  • Demonstrate culturally-relevant teaching practices and maintain high expectations for all students.
  • Ability and skills necessary to individualize instruction.
  • Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop students’ technology literacy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, collaboratively and positively with students, parents, and colleagues, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups.
  • Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios, and student self-assessment.
  • Attend ongoing professional development activities, such as college course work, professional associations, workshops, and in-service opportunities.
  • Exhibit a strong and positive attitude with the belief that each student can be taught and has the right and capacity to achieve personal academic excellence.
