On-site non-emergency medical care for Students & Staff

About the Program

Students and staff can now access non-emergency medical care on campus at Sallie B. Howard!

When a student or staff member gets sick at school, a trained health coordinator will work with an online provider – Health-e-schools – via safe and secure computer equipment to treat that patient during the school day.

We can treat illnesses and help students manage known medical conditions.

This on-site, same-day care means having students and staff miss less time at school and enables us to address symptoms early to prevent the spread and severity of an illness.

The telehealth program was made possible by a grant from the Healthcare Foundation of Wilson.

  • Parents are strongly encouraged to keep their child at home and have their primary physician see them if the child has a fever or symptoms of illness. The telehealth clinic is designated for illnesses/medical needs that occur during the school day.
  • To participate in the telehealth program, parents must register and sign consent forms for their student.
  • A teacher/staff refers the student with symptoms to the Health Coordinator by completing a school nurse form and sending it with the student to the clinic.
  • The Coordinator assesses the student based on provider protocol.
    • If Coordinator determines student’s condition warrants the next level of care, student’s parent/guardian is called to get verbal consent to schedule a telehealth appointment.
    • Student should also have consent form on file. If not, parent will have to complete form before student can be seen by provider.
    • If Coordinator can address patient’s medical needs without seeking a provider, student receives care and is sent back to class (if no fever is detected).

  • Staff who have a fever or symptoms are encouraged to stay home and visit their primary physician.
  • Prior to being seen by the Health Coordinator, complete an assessment form HERE.
  • For telehealth visits, staff must register online.
  • The Coordinator assesses staff based on provider protocol.
    • If Coordinator determines that the staff’s condition warrants the next level of care, a telehealth appointment will be scheduled.
    • If Coordinator can address patient’s medical needs without seeking a provider, staff receives care and is sent back to class (if no fever is detected).
  • Once Coordinator receives verbal consent by the parent, the Coordinator contacts the Health-e-schools scheduler. Appointment is made and student returns to class until appointment time (with mask, depending on symptoms).
  • At appointment time, Coordinator starts the telehealth session with the provider and patient, explains the situation and provider takes it from there. The parent/guardian can attend the appointment via phone if requested.
  • Provider may suggest tests (ie strep, covid) be given by the Coordinator.
  • Patient may receive meds as prescribed by provider.
  • If the patient does not have a fever and is not diagnosed with a contagious condition, they can finish their day at school.
  • Coordinator follows up with patient after a day or two to check on status.
  • Sinus congestion
  • Common allergies
  • Cold symptoms
  • Sore throat
  • Ear infections

  • Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”)

  • Many other common conditions and illnesses
