Let’s Celebrate National STEM/STEAM Day!

STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, encompasses a wide range of subjects and activities. STEAM day, celebrated Nov. 8, 2021, is dedicated to promoting skills in these fields and encouraging students to discover how to turn those skills into fulfilling careers.

The History of STEM/STEAM Day

STEAM Day has been a long time in the making. The creation of this day was spurred by lawmakers and nongovernmenal organizations. They were concerned about U.S. students’ need to improve in these skills, as well as educators’ need for an in-depth understanding of STEM-related career options to guide students into these fields.

How to Celebrate STEM/STEAM Day With Your Kids

There are a multitude of ways you can celebrate STEM/STEAM Day with your kids. Some ideas include:

  • Visit a museum.
  • Watch a movie or read a book about discoveries in scientific and artistic fields.
  • Do some simple (or complex) scientific experiments with your kids.
  • Do a baking project together. Math is imperative if you want to bake a delicious batch of cookies.
  • Encourage your kids to show off what they know about science and modern technology.
  • Look for local STEM/STEAM-related events you can take part in.

Does It Matter?

Your enthusiasm for STEM/STEAM is sure to be contagious, inspiring your kids to consider learning more about these all-important fields. What they learn will benefit them for life even if they don’t choose a STEM/STEAM-related career.

At the same time, there are many STEM-related career opportunities available for young people who are interested in these fields. These include jobs in computing, architecture, engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, accounting, and managerial work in these and related fields.

The Federal government, state governments, companies, and NGOs alike need dedicated STEM workers. North Carolina, which has consistently ranked as one of the top three best states for business, will likely have much to offer graduates in STEM-related fields. What’s more, the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the annual median salary in STEM occupations is more than twice as high as for non-STEM job fields.

The Sallie B. Howard School of Arts and Science offers rigorous academic training to students who want to maximize their talents and opportunities in STEM-related fields. Contact us to learn more about our programs or to schedule a tour at your convenience.
