Education through The Performing Arts

The Arts classes at Sallie B. Howard School offer a unique program with extraordinary performing arts learning experiences designed to challenge and stimulate each student’s creativity.

K-1
The K-1 stage allows students to enjoy every discipline at least once a week throughout the school year. Visual and performing arts classes for these grade levels are: dance, music, drama, visual arts, library, physical education, and spanish.

2-3
In grades 2-3, your child will major in one discipline for one hour, five days a week. At this level, an instructor may recommend a student for a specific class if they see potential in the child based on observations from previous years. However, these recommendations are optional, as parents can choose to decline the recommendation and have their child audition with the rest of the students.

4-8
Grades 4-8, students select three choices from the list of visual and performing arts options and rank them in order from most to least desired. At this level, the audition process is more rigorous. Students are grouped by discipline in a combination of fourth- and fifth- grade grade majors for 60 minutes and sixth- through eighth- grade majors for 75 minutes. The majors options are: arts and crafts (sixth-eighth only), band, chorus, computer science, dance, multimedia, arts exploration, intro to sports, photography, spanish, theatre arts, and visual arts.

Parental Guidance
At the fourth through eighth grade level, parental guidance is vital to the selection of classes to audition for. Parents will rank the recommended performing-arts-based choices in order of the most desired to least desired and students will audition for the first three choices. Majors at these grade levels are: band, chorus, dance, intro to sports, spanish, theatre arts, and visual arts.
