At Sallie B. Howard School of Arts & Science, we believe that children are our future. This motivates us to continuously work to ensure they become more than they ever thought they could be. We are able to do that largely because of the kindness of others who invest in the same vision.
Changing lives one student at a time
Recently, we received a generous financial gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott aimed to support our charter school.
We are grateful that this came when we were in the middle of an increasingly expensive facilities and programming expansion resulting from our transition into a K-12 school.
Our key area of focus will be to enhance student performance and increase resources for excelling through the following improvements:
- Construction of a two-story high school building to increase instructional space and allow us to offer students a variety of electives and programs.
- Renovation of our 20+ year old auditorium to convert it into a professional-grade theater fit for a modern performing arts school.
- Increasing the art, dance, chorus and digital media supplies
- Replacing aging instruments in our music department
For our students’ and staff’s safety, we are replacing and, in some areas, installing security doors across our campus. We are also adding spacious green space and an inclusive playground for multi-abled students.
Another area of focus is retaining and attracting teacher talent by offering competitive salaries and scholarships. These funds will help us find the best educators to join and remain with our school family, thereby bettering our teaching outcomes.
We are proud of our achievements, including the addition of our high school and, most recently, the National Blue Ribbon School Award. As a charter school, we celebrate each milestone that helps us achieve our goal for all of our students and faculty.
As we settle into our transition to a K-12 school, we invite interested donors to join our mission to provide a world-class education to Eastern NC students.
