Sallie B. Howard School will begin the 2020-2021 school year with 100% remote learning until October 6, 2020, the end of the 1st quarter. School leaders will continue to assess when it is safe to return to in-person instruction and will notify parents accordingly.

All classes will be conducted via Zoom and Google Classroom.All students are eligible to borrow a device and a WiFi hotspot to attend online classes and submit assignments remotely.

Devices

Sallie B. Howard School will loan a device to each registered student in need of a device for the 2020-2021 school year.

Before borrowing a device, please read the following rules:

SBHS students will receive either a Chromebook or an iPad.
SBHS devices are for educational use only.
These devices are the property of SBHS. Just like all school property, parents/students are responsible for any lost or damaged materials that have been loaned to them.
Parents borrowing a device from the school must not owe any fees to SBHS or missing any previously-borrowed devices from SBHS.
If you have not returned a SBHS device from the last quarter or during summer school, you cannot receive a new device until the old one is returned.
If you return adevice that you borrowed from the last quarter or during summer school with missing or damaged parts, you must pay the damage fees listed in the device contract before getting a new device.
Parents must have Wi-Fi access in the home to use these devices for remote instruction and to attend live Zoom classes.

If you currently do not have Wi-Fi access, hot spot devices have been ordered and will be available to families without internet service when received. Additionally, free Wi-Fi connectivity is available in the SBH parking lot and throughout our campus.

HOW DO I LOG INTO MY CHROMEBOOK OR IPAD?

To connect to the Internet, use a compatible Wi-Fi network.

Step 1: Turn on Wi-Fi

At the bottom right, select the time.
Select Not Connected.
Note: If you see your Wi-Fi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already
connected to Wi-Fi.
Turn on Wi-Fi.
Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them to you in a
list.

Step 2: Pick a network and connect

Connect to an open network
Select the Wi-Fi network

Remember, your information might be visible to other people on this network.

Connect to a secure network

Select the secure Wi-Fi network.
Type the network password.
Select Connect.

Log into Chromebook

Click on the “Password” field under the “SBH Student” username.
Enter the password Pride2011
Press “enter” key.

The student is now logged in and can use the Chromebook under the generic “Student Account”.

Add the Student’s Google Classroom Account

Click “Add Person” in the lower left side of the screen.
Enter the username (ex. first name. last name@students.sallieb.net)
Click “Next”.
Enter the student created password (student should already know this).
Click “Next”.

The student is now logged into the Chromebook with their Google Classroom Account.

Connect to an Open Wi-Fi network

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Turn on Wi-Fi. Your device will automatically search for available Wi-Fi networks.
Tap the name of the Wi-Fi network that you want to join.

Connect to a secure Wi-Fi network

Secure Wi-Fi networks are password-protected and have
by their names.

Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
Tap the name of the secure Wi-Fi network you want to join.
Enter the password for the secure Wi-Fi network, then tap Join. If you can’t tap Join, the password you’ve entered is incorrect.

After you join the network, you’ll see next to the network and in the upper-left side of your display or the upper right corner.

SBHS has a dedicated team of teachers and staff who are committed to making sure your child has an engaging learning experience and that his/her learning needs are addressed. During last year’s 4th quarter of remote learning, our attendance rate averaged 80% while state and local districts averaged a 25% attendance rate.

Online classes will be live 30-55 min sessions on Zoom. We will follow the same system of teaching and learning that we follow in the building. All subjects, including Arts specials and electives, will be taught on Zoom. Teachers will be able to see students working in real time using video cameras, and will check and grade their work. If a student disrupts lessons, they will be removed from class, parents will be notified, and the student may be suspended – the same as we do when at school.

ATTENDANCE & GRADES

Attendance will be taken in PowerSchool and student work will be graded and entered into PowerSchool. Attendance and grades count towards promotion/retention.

SCHEDULE

Class schedules for remote instruction can be found on the “Class Schedules” tab on the “Remote Instruction” page on the SBHS website. All lessons are recorded and available upon request. 15 min breaks/transitions are scheduled in between classes. Longer breaks are scheduled for a lunch period. Contact your teacher on Remind for specific questions about the schedule.

Check to make sure your device speaker is on.
Right after entering the meeting did you select “Join Audio” on the lower left-hand
corner of the menu bar? If not, select “Join Audio” in the menu bar.

panel.
Try using earphones.
Restart your mobile device.

All lessons on Zoom are recorded live. Teachers will send out the link to that recording on the Remind app.

REMIND

Download the “Remind: School Communication” app from the App Store (iPhones) or
the Play Store (Android)
Create an account. You’ll need an email address or phone number for this step. After you enter your information, you’ll be prompted to finish setting up your account.
To join a class, you’ll need to get the code for the class. Call the school office (252-293-4150) or email parents@sallieb.net to request this.

ETIQUETTE

1. Be on time. Come a few minutes early and check your tech before class.
2. A consistent, dedicated place free from distractions, background noise, seated at a desk
  or table is preferred for remote instruction.
3. Student sound will be muted. Teacher may unmute when needed.
4. Sit in one location. Don’t walk around with your device.
5. Active participation. Be focused and pay attention just like you would in a classroom.
6. Use chat box. Write your questions for the teacher here. Teacher may unmute you to
  speak your question.
7. Maximize learning time and minimize the need for breaks by having a cup/bottle of
  water to drink with you and using the bathroom before class.
8. Students should not attend class in bed.
9. Students should be dressed appropriately as if going to school.
10. Good lighting in the room is needed.
11. Material and supplies on the desk/table are needed (pencil, paper, etc.).
12. Video cameras are always on.
13. Complete and submit all assignments on time.
14. Students will be removed from the class for disruptive or inappropriate behavior.Suspensions can occur. Parents will be notified.
15. CFAs and EOQs will be administered and grades will be recorded.
