(Wilson, N.C.) – September 18, 2024 – The N.C. Department of Public Instruction has released its data on the 2023-2024 End-of-Grade (EOG) and End-of-Course (EOC) exams and Sallie B. Howard School has secured another year of outstanding academic performance.

For the sixth consecutive year, SBHS earned an overall performance grade of “B” with a score of 83, an increase of 5 points from last year and just two points away from an “A.”

SBHS continues to exceed growth each year, scoring an 8.89 school growth index which puts the school in the top 1% in the state.

SBHS students in grades 3-8 saw solid increases in EOG scores across the board: 70% students were proficient in Reading (up from last year’s 68.2%); 81.9% in Math (74.2% last year), and 93.6% in Science compared to 90% last year.

EOC scores among SBH high school students remained high. The 9-12 graders increased their overall proficiency to 93%, up 2 points from last year. 91% of high school students were proficient in English II; 98% passed both Math I and Math III; and biology was at 87% proficiency.

SBH students continue to outperform the county and state in record numbers, including in English Learners Progress, where ESL students are exiting the program at a rate (26%) 5 times that of Wilson County (5%).

Over the past decade, Sallie B. Howard has made significant strides in improving academic outcomes, working its way from a 56 (“C”) overall score in 2014 to today’s 83. 62% of SBHS’ student population is designated economically disadvantaged, a circumstance that has not stopped the school’s academic achievement.

“The success of our students is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our incredible teachers and the entire school community,” said Sallie B. Howard K-12 principal Glenn Reaves. “From our teachers and staff to our front office personnel and custodians, everyone plays a vital role in creating a positive and supportive learning environment that allows our students to achieve.”
