(Wilson, N.C.) – September 21, 2023 – The state released its End-of-Grade (EOG) and End-of-Course (EOC) test scores earlier this month and Sallie B. Howard School showed outstanding growth and achievement overall. For the fifth consecutive year, SBHS has earned a performance grade of “B” and a school performance score of 78, up four points from last year.
EOG scores for 3-8 SBHS students saw significant gains across the board: 68.6% students were proficient in Reading (versus last year’s 61.6%); 74.4% in Math (66.7% last year), and 90% in Science compared to 84.2% last year.
SBH high school students taking the EOC exams racked up stellar results for the second year in a row with an overall proficiency score of 91% – which qualifies as an “A” grade – and high marks in the tested subject areas. 91% of students were proficient in English II; 90% passed Math I and 100% passed Math III; and 87% of high school students were proficient in Biology.
In every category, SBH students outperformed the county and state on the EOG and EOC tests with double-digit differences – a testament to the number of highly effective teachers, instructional practices and high expectations for student achievement.
Sallie B. Howard School, of which 62% is considered economically disadvantaged, is among the 4.9% of all schools in North Carolina with an EDS population between 60-80% that scored a “B” performance grade.
SBH is one of only two charter schools in North Carolina with an EDS percentage in the 60% or higher range that scored a B or above.
“The credit for the tremendous results from the 2022-2023 EOG and EOC exams goes to our hard-working teachers and staff who come together everyday to make sure our students are successful in school and in life,” says Glenn Reaves, principal of middle and high school.
“We ask more from our teachers than probably most schools, but they deliver every time. I am also extremely proud of our students! They truly stepped up to the challenge despite the many distractions and obstacles they face in the world. I always say this, but Sallie B. Howard has the best students in North Carolina!”
