(Wilson, N.C.) – April 2, 2025 – Sallie B. Howard School is proud to share that HS Science teacher Jonas Almerino has received the Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2025 CAST Award, or “Career Award for STEM Teachers.”
The CAST Award, which includes a $175,000 grant over five years, recognizes outstanding STEM teachers in North Carolina public primary and secondary schools.
Almerino is one of five educators in the state chosen for his ability to demonstrate a deep commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in North Carolina.
“I want to thank the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the Sallie B. Howard leadership team for their support,” said Almerino during the surprise reveal last month when Burroughs Wellcome delivered the exciting news in person. “I also want to thank my students. I want to help them see what science can do for them. This award is for you guys.”
The grant will be used to set up science equipment and “living labs” in the new high school building and provide Almerino with enhanced professional development resources.
