SBHS Launches Campaign Highlighting the Power of Charter Schools

(Wilson, N.C.) – May 22, 2024 – Sallie B. Howard School of Arts & Science, a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School, today announced the launch of a new advertising campaign aimed at informing parents about the benefits of charter schools. Funded by a grant from the national philanthropic nonprofit Charter School Growth Fund, the campaign, entitled “Free, Public, and Open to All,” emphasizes the core message that charter schools are a great educational option that’s accessible to all:

  • Free: Charter schools do not charge tuition.
  • Public: Charter schools are public schools authorized by the State Board of Education and operated by independent boards of directors. State and local tax dollars are the primary funding sources for charter schools.
  • Open to All: Parents can choose the best educational environment for their child, regardless of their zip code.

Sallie B. Howard School, established in 1997 as one of the first charter schools in N.C., exemplifies the positive impact of charter schools. With a strong academic program and track record for closing the achievement gap, SBHS consistently delivers outstanding results for its students. On recent state exams, SBHS students outperformed the county and state by double-digit differences in tested subject areas. For the 2022-2023 EOG and EOC, SBHS earned an overall performance grade of “B” (for the fifth consecutive year) and a score of 78, while SBH High School scored a 91, an “A” grade. (read more)

Sallie B. Howard also offers an innovative and rigorous curriculum that prepares students for college and careers with its Biotechnology and Study Abroad programs as well as its Arts-based instruction.

“We are thrilled to launch this campaign to help spread the word about the tremendous opportunities at Sallie B. Howard School and other high-performing charter schools in N.C.,” said Dr. JoAnne Woodard, SBHS Founder and Executive Director. “Sallie B. Howard is a testament to how charter schools can make a high-quality education accessible to all, regardless of their background or income. We are grateful to the Charter School Growth Fund for making this communications campaign possible.”

The “Free, Public, and Open to All” campaign will reach parents through various channels, including print and online ads, television spots, billboards, social media and community events. For more information on SBHS, visit salliebhowardschool.com
