English Second Language (ESL)

The Sallie B. Howard ESL Department serves nearly 170 students each year who have qualified as English Learners (EL), according to state and federal regulations.

Our goal is to provide these students with a research-oriented learning curriculum that can help English Learners better access classroom instruction and achieve academic success. We seek to develop EL students’ critical thinking skills to prepare them to mindfully navigate the media-saturated and diverse world that they live in.

Our ESL staff works closely with content-area teachers, parents, and leaders to ensure that these goals can be met.

For questions about our ESL services, please contact our EL coordinator, Camilo Dominguez Cruz at cdominguez@sallieb.net or (252) 293-4150 ext. 2110.
