At Sallie B. Howard School of Arts & Science, we not only provide our students with a high quality education, we are committed to keeping our school facilities in excellent condition to maximize longevity and align with evolving education, building, safety and security needs.

The Campus

The Sallie B. Howard School building was re-purposed in 2000 from an old textile factory located at 1004 Herring Avenue in Wilson, N.C.
SBHS spreads across more than 125,000 square feet on 9 acres of land. The main campus consists of 76,000 square feet with 40 classrooms, a 720-seat auditorium and a cafeteria that holds up to 300 guests.
Additional buildings have been added to include an 11,000 sq ft gymnasium that seats 350 and contains a sports office, a concessions area, two dance studios, a visual arts studio, and a state of the art computer lab.
Two middle school buildings comprised of six offices and eight state of the art classrooms were added later as well. 1,000 sq ft of trailers provide additional space for middle school instruction.
In 2020, SBHS opened a 26,000 sq ft high school complex that will accommodate 250 students.

The Technology

The entire SBHS campus is supported by a powerful broadband wireless system along with hi-speed Wi-Fi internet access throughout the facility.
Classroom teachers enjoy a wall-mounted SMART board along with a wall-mounted data projector.
Our campus-wide heating and cooling system is completely computerized and runs optimal temperatures and schedules to keep everyone comfortable and to conserve energy.

Energy Efficient

Sallie B. Howard School practices energy-efficient habits, including shutting down all building technology on the weekends, ensuring lights are off when classrooms are empty and minimizing energy consumption during peak hours.
As a result, SBHS has reduced energy consumption and saves over $55,000 a year in utility costs.
The school has also reduced waste in the cafeteria by installing a professional dishwasher and using washable trays.
