The Coding & STEM class at SBH is for middle school students only. The program follows the curriculum established by Code.org, an introductory computer science course that empowers students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. 

1st & 2nd Quarter – Coding-Exploration and Expression

Problem Solving and Computing

Students learn the problem-solving process, the input-output-store-process model of a computer, and how computers help humans solve problems. Students end the unit by proposing their own app to solve a problem.

Interactive Animations and Games

Students learn fundamental programming constructs and practices in the JavaScript programming language while developing animations and games in Code.org’s Game Lab environment. Students end the unit by designing their own animations and games.

3rd & 4th Quarter – STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21^st-century skills.

Students interested in the Coding & STEM class will interview with the instructor and share why they would like to take the class. Additional audition questions include:

1. When you hear the term collaboration what does that mean to you?

2. You are assigned to a group problem/concern what steps do you use to solve the problem?

3. Why does STEM appeal to you?

4. What do you expect to get from this class?

5. Share your position/expectation of a project base on the project.

6. Have you ever created or desired to create a phone app, computer app, other any kind of app?

7. Can you think of an occupation that uses Coding or incorporates STEM activities?

Students are expected to abide by the behavior policies and classroom guidelines set forth in the Parent-Student Handbook.
